Most people are arguing about which AI stock to buy…meanwhile, the smartest people in the world are buying copper mines.
Jeff Bezos is now betting on copper, backing a massive new discovery through KoBold Metals.
here’s the truth:
AI isn’t powered by algorithms, GPUs, or code.
AI runs on electricity.
And electricity runs on copper.
And we don’t have enough.
The Shocking Math
Between 2022 and 2050, the world will need more copper than we used from 1900 to 2021 combined.

128 years of demand…crammed into 28 years.
The supply situation looks horrible:
- Current mines + new projects cover only 80% of 2030 demand
- Global copper production peaks in 2030
By 2040, copper demand will be roughly 42 million tons. Supply, however, will remain closer to 32 million.
A shortfall of this size isn’t a minor inconvenience, it represents a structural constraint on energy, AI, and infrastructure growth.
When demand goes up and supply goes down, prices don’t rise slowly. They explode.
Why This Is Happening
1. AI needs massive amounts of copper
Every AI data center needs:
- power lines
- transformers
- cooling systems
- wiring
- GPU servers full of copper parts
AI is growing faster than anyone expected.
And every new model requires more copper than the last.
AI growth = copper demand growth.
2. Clean energy needs copper even more
EVs, solar, wind, smart grids, all copper heavy.
- EVs use 3–4x more copper than gas cars
- Wind turbines need tons of copper
- Solar farms use huge copper cables
- Upgrading the power grid requires copper everywhere
We can’t “go green” without copper.
But we’re running out of copper while trying to go green.
3. Copper supply is broken
It takes 10–20 years to build a new copper mine.
The last US mine approved was in 2008.
Why?
- billions in upfront costs
- declining ore quality
- strict regulations
- environmental pushback
- mining companies slowed exploration for years
You can’t fix a 20-year supply problem in 2 years.
This is the real crisis.
Catastrophic Supply Shocks (2025–2026)
Major copper mines failed or shut down:
- Grasberg mine in Indonesia buried under 800,000 tons of debris
- Chile’s El Teniente had deadly collapses
- DRC’s Kamoa-Kakula flooded
- Quebrada Blanca cut production by 20%
Analysts estimate:
- ~500,000 tons of supply wiped out
- 2026 shortage expected: 330,000 tons
- Inventories worldwide are at historic lows
Some warehouses have less than one day of copper available.
This is not normal.
This is a global warning sign.
Meanwhile… Demand Is Exploding
AI data centers alone could use 475,000 tons of copper in 2026.
The International Energy Agency says data center electricity demand will double by 2030.
Microsoft, Amazon, Google, none of them will cancel data centers because copper is expensive.
This demand is non-negotiable.
A 10 Million Ton Shortage Is Coming
Global copper production is projected to peak in 2030 at 33 million tons.
But by 2040, we will need 42 million tons.
That’s a 10 million ton hole with no solution.
And even if we find copper today, it won’t reach the market until 2040+.
That’s the definition of a supercycle.
History Says Copper Spikes During Big Transitions
Copper soared during:
- the Industrial Revolution
- World War eras
- the electrification boom
- post war reconstruction
Today’s transition, AI + electrification + energy shift, is bigger than all of those combined.
We are rebuilding the entire world’s energy and computing infrastructure at the same time.
With a metal we don’t have enough of.
Why I’m Investing
I’m not day trading copper.
I’m building a 5–10 year position.
When the headlines say:
“GLOBAL COPPER CRISIS”
I don’t want panic.
I want stability.
The Bigger Lesson
Most people ask:
“What AI stock should I buy?”
Few ask:
“What does AI physically need to exist?”
AI is not magic.
It’s infrastructure.
And infrastructure needs copper.
Innovation is exciting.
But necessity is what makes people rich.
Final Thought
AI isn’t slowing down.
EVs aren’t slowing down.
Grid upgrades aren’t slowing down.
All roads lead to copper.
The shortage is coming.
The only real question:
Will you be positioned before everyone else…..or realize it at the same time as them?
